The Struggle of Dealing with Virtual Assistants

 The term "Virtual Assistant" felt like sandpaper against my soul when I first heard it. Call me old-fashioned, but I despise long "on hold" periods while waiting to speak with someone in India who is reading from a script.

Then I got a job as a virtual assistant and discovered that I'd probably spoken to many VAs without knowing the difference. Great virtual assistant companies should fit in seamlessly with your company. These businesses take their jobs and their customers very seriously and should:
  • Treat your customers as if they are your customers.
  • Make an effort to not only meet but also exceed your expectations.
  • Learn about your company, including its customers, products or services, and competitors.
  • Business processes should be documented for redundancy and scalability.
A full-time employee works about eight hours per day, but are they really doing that much work? Employees are human beings. Human behavior and needs are being paid for by you (the business owner). Bathroom breaks, setup time, daydreaming, personal calls, and so on are unavoidable and add up quickly. After taxes, benefits (I won't get into the Affordable Care Act), training, office space, supplies, and downtime, the average employee costs at least twice their salary.
These expenses are avoided by hiring a virtual assistant. You are charged by the minute for work that is actually being done for you by a team of competent 'employees.'
While an employee may appear to be more accessible, that individual only brings their specific skill set, which may not cover the task at hand. With a virtual assistance company, you may have a single point of contact that you refer to as your Virtual Assistant, but in reality, your superstar VA is supported by a team of VAs. Your VA team has a wide range of skills for a wide range of tasks.
The ability to speak with someone face to face is extremely valuable. However, technology is making it easier to collaborate with people virtually. The argument that "it's just easier to work with someone in the same office" is losing credibility. Video communication is now more affordable and accessible than ever before. The vast majority of people already work virtually without even realizing it. People who work in the same office continue to use email as their primary means of virtual communication. Most data is stored and transferred electronically. When we're on the road, we all use our smartphones to stay connected to the office. For most of us, working virtually is already a reality.
Business owners frequently keep their business close to their chest and are hesitant to delegate tasks. It's understandable; their company is their child. And I'm sure you've heard the expression "do it yourself if you want it done right." The truth is that if you want something done correctly, you must first learn to delegate to the right virtual assistant companies.
